音をまったく出さない作品「四分三十三秒」は、もっともコンセプチュアルな音楽だと見なされてきた。 身体性を排除する方向に先鋭化してきた現代音楽にとってこの作品こそその典型例だという。
しかし、現代音楽を常に革新し続けてきたジョン・ケージは、これまでの非身体的な現代音楽に身体の可能性をもちこんだ張本人でもあった。
「四分三十三秒」こそ、実は身体の再組織化の試みだったのではないか。

The composition「4'33"」,which contains no sound at all,has come to be seen as the extreme in conceptual music.This piece is classic example of modern music's radical trend towards the removal of physicality. However, John Cage, who is continually revolutionizing modern music,is also the man who began exploring the possibilities of the body in modern music heretofore devoid of physicality. 「4'33"」itself is really an attempt to restructure the body. Listen to John Cage's music again as a music of the body.
