嗅覚、野生の力の復権

ヨーロッパ近代とは、視覚主義の世界と言い換えることができる。 圧倒的な目の専制による文化支配を可能にしたのが、まさしく近代であった。 嗅覚は、五感の中で視覚の対極にある感覚である。 いわば、嗅覚は近代の象徴である。 なぜ、嗅覚は、凋落を余儀なくされたのか。 近代の息詰まりが言われる中で、もう一度五感を見直し、嗅覚の重要性を再発験しなければならない。

It is possible to say that modern European society chooses to perceive the world visually.
It is modernity that has allowed the eye to dominate culture so completely.
The sense of smell is at the other end of the sensory hierarchy from sight.
Smell could be called a symbol of the pre-modern.
Why has the sense of smell been unquestioningly allowed to slip away ?
With modern culture stalled , it seems necessary to reexamine the five senses, and rediscover the importance of smell.
